North Somerset Media Project

From Equality South West

In North Somerset, following on from the first years event held jointly with North Somerset REC where young people decided that they would like to use the media to influence decisions, we held another event to engage young people with film and different understandings of what community meant to them.

This started with a whole day event, held in partnership with Stonham Housing, on a Saturday where we used puppets to explore the idea of community.

This led to a weekly series of sessions in which we developed ideas of what and how people would like to see changed in their local area. It was decided to focus on the issue that there is not enough for young people to do in Weston super Mare. The group then organised a volunteering session and carried out a beach clean at Sandy Bay, which was filmed by the young people involved to highlight the positive contributions they make to the community.

This was then followed up by making a film by the pier at Weston Super Mare, where the group asked passers about what they felt about their local community, and whether they agreed that there was not enough for young people to do.

What is Community?

What do you think about the community in Weston Super Mare?
