Disability Cornwall

(formally the Cornwall Disability Forum)

The aims of the Disability Cornwall are as follows:

  1. To increase opportunities within social, edcuation, training and employment
    environments
  2. To improve and encourage communication and greater understanding -
    within the disability sector in Cornwall and between disability organisations and
    external agencies / authorities
  3. To challenge discrimination and inequalities and promote examples of good
    practice

Somerset Access and Inclusion Network of disabled people

SAIN is an organisation of disabled people working through consultation, representation, research and service provision to improve access to all services and facilities in Somerset.

SAIN's main objective is to build up a network of individuals and organisations and to improve communication between them. It seeks to obtain information from the participants and to impart information to them. To achieve this SAIN works with individuals with disabilities, with organisations representing disabled people and with service providers throughout the County.

Exeter University - Disability & the workplace

Researchers from Exeter University are currently looking at the challenges that some equalities communities face in the workplace. This groundbreaking research into (if and) how being marginalised affects professionals starts in June 2006 with small focus groups and one-on-one interviews to explore the themes and issues surrounding individuals and groups from Black & Minority Ethnic, LGBT, Disabled and Parental returnees to work (after a childcare break).

Community Council of Devon - access to goods and services for older and disabled people

The Community Council of Devon are working on a three year lottery funded project to support and improve the access issues in and around rural community buildings.  The project covers the practical support and advice to hall management committees re their role and responsibilities around the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), including access audits.  In addition, the project works with the management committee to diversify the range and quality of activities and services within the community building to improve access to goods and services for older people and disabled people.  For further information, please contact the project officer, Penny Thame on 01392 38 3443 or email penny@devonrcc.org.uk. Rethink - Mental Health Service Provider

Rethink is a national mental health membership charity working to help everyone affected by severe mental illness recover a better quality of life.  They offer over 350 services including advocacy, carer support, community support, employment and training, help-lines, housing, nursing and residential care and services dedicated to black and minority ethnic communities.  On a local level, services are funded through contracts with statutory health and social care agencies.

Disabled Entrepreneurs Project (DEP) - Supporting Pre-Start Disabled Entrepreneurs

The Disabled Entrepreneurs’ Project (DEP) is an eighteen month programme specifically designed to support pre-start disabled entrepreneurs.  DEP’s key objectives will be to provide a bespoke business service, with relevant and accessible information and advice, which will encourage disabled entrepreneurs to realise their own personal and business potential.

Royal NationaI Institue of Blind People Library Catalogue - Access to over 170,000 items - Free

Cornwall Deaf Association

Cornwall Deaf Association's aim is to support, advocate and help meet the needs of Deaf and Hard of hearing adults and children in Cornwall and the Isle of Scilly.  They provide Deaf awareness training, British sign language teaching, consultancy and information.

So Out in the South West - Created by Disabled Gay Men for Disabled Gay Men

So Out in the South West is a organisation set up to meet the needs of disabled gay men living, working or visiting the South West.  They host events throughout the South West and further afield for disabled gay men, the aim of which are to allow disabled gay men to socialise with one another is a safe environment with the correct support for those needing it and to create a space in which to discuss ideas without prejudice.

Walks on Wheels

Members of the public can chose from 15 ‘walking’ experiences such as a route that takes in the highest point in the Cotswolds at Cleeve Common just outside Cheltenham, or two pleasant routes alongside canals in the south of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

All of the routes have been tested by disability and access groups from across the Cotswolds and have been carefully chosen to ensure that they are appropriate for users. The walks are available to download on the Cotswolds AONB website at www.cotswoldsaonb.org.uk
