Many businesses in the region have recruited large numbers of migrant workers to fill vacancies that otherwise would not have been filled, but English language barriers often mean that employers are unable to get the full value out of their migrant workforce. Wiltshire employer, Airsprung Beds have greatly increased the skills of their migrant workforce and boosted their productivity through a Learning Agreement with the GMB to organise English provision.

Helping Workers Access Services
Riverfords Organic Vegetables
It is often difficult for workers who have just come to the UK to access local services. Limited English and/or a lack of knowledge and familiarity regarding UK services like GPs, Dentists and Citizens Advice Bureaux, can leave many migrant workers vulnerable, even while their taxes are paying for such services.
Riverfords Organic Vegetables, are aware of the need to ensure their migrant employees have the same ability to access services as their UK born workers. To support their workforce the company have employed a dedicated Welfare Officer with responsibility for supporting the whole workforce, which includes giving support for new migrant workers.

Learning English with the Job - a Case Study from the Care Sector
English @ Work and Forde Park Care
The Care Sector is a major of employer of both EU and non-EU migrant workers. However the necessity of understanding clients, some of whom have difficulties communicating, means that English language skills are even more crucial in this area of work, than elsewhere.
Consequently, Forde Park Care, a small privately run care home in Newton Abbott, Devon, were very keen to take advantage of the new English @ Work courses offered for free for employers in the county by Productive Skills for Devon.
