Re-recognise UNISON, says ESW

From Equality South West

Equality South West has added its voice to those calling on Plymouth City Council to re-recognise UNISON.

The authority took the decision to call off all negotiations with the UK's largest public sector union after officials refused to sign an agreement that would have discriminated against lower-paid council workers.

Katie Pratt, Chief Executive of Equality South West, said: "Trade unions have a long and proud history of promoting equality in the workplace, and it is vital they are allowed to continue to do so."

UNISON representatives have been ejected from their office in the city council building in a move that seems to contradict the council's own corporate equality policy, which states: "No person or group, whether accessing services, applying for a job or through employment, will be treated unfairly by the council because of their trade union affiliation."

Katie Pratt said: "Trade unionists have been treated unfairly by being refused a voice in negotiations about their own pay and conditions.

Who will speak up for their members if their voices are silenced?

"I hope the council sees sense and re-recognises UNISON as soon as possible, so both parties can work together in promoting equality."
