Accession to Recession: A8 Migration in Bristol and Hull

(Centre for Cities, 2009)

This report examines and compares the impact of Eastern European migration on two contrasting city economies – Bristol and Hull. The research included an analysis of labour market and migration statistics as well as interviews with stakeholders, migrant workers, employers, trade unions and employment and skills agencies. Talk the Talk: Languages in the South West 2008

(Regional Language Network South West, February 2009)

This report, which Equality South West contributed to, provides the latest data on languages spoken within the South West region. It looks at languages spoken in the South West, visitor numbers to the region, language provision and internal trade flows and argues that the region needs to capitalise on the existing language skills held by its resident migrant workers as well as by local people, overseas students and UK-born graduates.

This report is based on a short piece of research carried out by Equality South West involving fieldwork among nine migrant community groups and a desk-top survey of employers in the region The report examines outflows and intentions to leave or remain amongst migrant workers and the extent to which employers are making use of the skills of migrants. Migrant Workers in Mendip

This report collates is based on research carried out by a Scrutiny Task and Finish Group. Migrant Workers and Houses in Multiple Occupation in West Wiltshire: A study on behalf of West Wiltshire District Council

(Michael Howard Associates commissioned by West Wiltshire District Council through the IDeA’s Migration Excellence Programme)

Migrant Workers in Wiltshire

(Lindsay Wall, Alex Hall and Latif Ismail, Transparency Research for Wiltshire Wide Citizens Advice and Wiltshire Racial Equality Council, 2008)

This research included fieldwork with migrant workers in Trowbridge and Melksham and interviews with organisations working with migrants. This is the South West Strategic Migration Partnership’s response to the Migration Impacts Forum’s consultation on the regional impact of migration on public services. It cites the essential contribution that migrants make to the region’s economy but also highlights a number of issues for public service providers, which Central Government needs to address.
